Glagolitic monuments
Start from A... Learn about Glagolitsa, a type of an alphabetic script, used by Croatians up until the end of the 19th century. One of the first found documents ever written in the Croatian language and Glagolitic script, the Baška Tablet, was found on Krk. The island is, therefore, often referred to as the cradle of Croatian literacy.
As an important element of culture on Krk, the reproduction of the Baška Tablet can be seen in the Church of St Lucy in Jurandvor near Baška. Near this town you can also go for a hike along the Glagolitic Trail and see the statues of individual letters along the way.
Other examples of Glagolitic heritage can be found all over the island, among others in the towns of Vrbnik and Dobrinj, in the Monastery of St Mary in Glavotok and the Franciscan Monastery on the peaceful island of Košljun near Krk town and Punat
Frankopan heritage
Discover the story about the once mighty noble Croatian family - the Frankopans. During the Middle Ages their seat used to be on the island, so their legacy is a prominent feature of Krk culture. Their influence from the 12th throughout the 17 th century spread even further than their estates in the Kvarner area
Their story is best represented by the Routes of the Frankopans on Krk as well as in Vinodol and Gorski kotar on the mainland. The best way to explore their heritage on Krk is to visit the Frankopan Castle in Krk town and the Franciscan Monastery on Košljun island. Should you be interested in an exciting quest, look for the remains of the Gradec castle in the forest near Vrbnik
Ancient ruins and remains
Discover the traces of times long past all over the island! As you go on a hiking or cycling adventure on the island, you are sure to come across historical remains. One of the finest examples of Roman culture on Krk are the remains of the ancient settlement Fulfinum. There is also an early Christian basilica next to it. This archaeological park in Mirine near Omišalj indeed has a very special ambiance
There are many other archaeological sites and ruins with an air of magic and mystery. Exploring the north and west, you may stumble upon the stone Church of St Chrysogonus (Milohnići), archaeological site Cickini (Malinska) with a museum in Sv. Vid, the Church of St Peter (Soline), Fortičina fortress (Omišalj).
There are also a few other examples of ruins in the southern and eastern part of the island. They include the Church of St Marco (Risika), the Church of St George (Vrbnik), the Church of St George (Mala Kras)
Museums
Presenting life as it once was... There are a number of fascinating ethnographic collections depicting the life of the islanders in the past in Kornić, Baška, Dobrinj and Malinska. Consider also visiting the museum on Košljun islet and the Maritime Heritage Interpretation Centre (Krk town).
